Also watch for ACTION/REACTION when it comes to the order of events. Make sure the stimulus comes before the response, otherwise you’ll have a reversal—the reaction before the action that caused it.

Reversed:
I startled as the doorbell rang.

Correct:
The doorbell startled me.

Watch for words like AS or WHEN. The stimulus/response can be reversed. AS or WHEN can also mean two things are happening at the same time, when in reality one event has to come before the other.
